We want great people showing up for our Rescues! We love that there are actually people out there in the world that can open their hearts and homes to a Rescue from Harmony New Beginnings, and because they adopt from us they become part of the Harmony Family. So here are some questions that can help you to understand adoption with us.
But what does that mean? To adopt? It is not the same as owning outright the Rescue. We enter into a lifelong (of the Rescue’s life) contract with adoptive homes that ensures that our Rescues are always going to be provided a home. We have an adoption application and contract, we do home checks as needed, we also check references provided by adoptive families and we follow up during the Rescue’s life with that home to make sure that the home knows we are there for them all. Sometimes we provide resources such as horsemanship and critter handling tips, information on trusted veterinarians, farriers and trainers. The best thing we can do is to support Harmony families by being available for these kinds of things. We also want to make sure you get a chance to show off that awesome Rescue by posting updates on our webpage and social media so that other Harmony Family members can cheer you on!
What are adoption fees all about? Well we are a non-profit and everything we receive for funding is through generous donors, grant awards and adoption fees. Also our non-profit doesn’t give anyone a paycheck, all money is for the benefit of the Rescues, ALL OF IT. Adoption fees are put right back into the Rescues. It affords another Rescue the opportunity to receive great veterinarian care, or hoof care, or dental care, spaying/neutering/gelding procedures, feeding, or bringing in a new Rescue. Animals are always in need, that is why they are here in the first place and those adoption fees can help in very real ways. Sometimes we will not have a fee but have a special caveat in the contract such as training required for example.
Do people ever get told no they cannot adopt a Rescue from us? Yes, unfortunately not everyone is equipped to handle a Rescue even though their heart is in the right place. We have to think first always for our Rescues, that is our primary goal to find them great homes and it is sometimes the truth is that not everyone is ready for a particular Rescue. It is an important responsibility for the adoptive home and HNBAR to work together for the Rescue. Just remember that MANY homes are told “YES! We would love to adopt our Rescue to you!”
So what helps to become a YES in the application process? We would love to have great homes step up who can agree to offer adequate space for the Rescue, food, water, shelter (even for Rescues that are considered livestock), routine veterinarian care appropriate to the species of the Rescue, hoof care (where applicable), passing the home, veterinarian, personal reference checks and also to uphold and understand that the contract says that the Rescue animal cannot be bred or resold for the lifetime of the Rescue and to abide by the contract for the duration of the adoptive Rescue’s lifetime.
Can kids adopt a Rescue? Unfortunately no. In the eyes of the law no minor under the age of 18 can enter into a legally binding contract so a parent/guardian must be the responsible party at all times and is the person listed in the contract with HNBAR*. But you know what could be great? Have kids have a contract with their parent/guardian about the care of the Rescue, strike up an agreement about responsibilities that are age appropriate for that kid and the Rescue. If you need help finding out what are age appropriate tasks for care, ask us, we will help you out.
Still want to adopt a HNBAR* Rescue? Awesome! If we don’t have a particular Rescue of interest to you, someday down the line we just might have someone come to us who is, want to fill out an adoption application and get pre-approval as a Harmony Family? Do it! We know that it can sometimes be a wait but it will be worth the wait if that Rescue comes in and it is a possible match. We know also that we may have a Rescue already of interest to you, that too is awesome! We want you to set an appointment to meet the Rescue. You can do so by making a phone call and telling us who you are interested in meeting and that is an important step to finding out if that Rescue is the right fit. We have some great Harmony Family members who are volunteers, donors and adopters who want nothing more than to find homes for these Rescues and filling out an application is a great start either before or after meeting the Rescue.
We hope that if you do not Rescue with us that you please ask us who else might be able to fill your generous home? We can network with other legitimate rescues with good community standing to get you on that path. We urge adoptions all the time, why? Because adoptions are giving a Rescue the best chance at a great life with the support of people who care to make it possible. So if you are ready to start the adoption process with us what are you waiting for? Set an appointment, send an email and let’s grow together in harmony as family!
